Aspers Milton Keynes Redundancies Announced

Aspers the UK Casino operator has contacted their staff in Milton Keynes and warned that redundancies will happen before they are able to open in early July.

It is expected that the UK government will allow the opening of casinos on the 4th July along with outside beer gardens and some other leisure facilities.

However in an email seen by a local newspaper managing director Nigel Hartland has said that the company expect a drop of 50% in business due to the COVID-19 pandemic and as such their business model will have to change given the restrictions on its business due to social distancing.

His email is quoted as saying: “I am writing, to advise you that we believe a redundancy situation has unfortunately arisen within the company due to the economic and business consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic and the prolonged period of closure of the Casino from March 2020. As a result, we believe we need to restructure to be able to reduce costs and sustain the business going forward.”

It goes on to explain that the redundancies will affect all areas of the business, gaming table staff, security, bar and waiting staff.

He went on to say that because visitor numbers will be greatly reduced because of the 2m rule along with a hugely altered bar and restaurant service business will be down by at least 50%.

Mr Hartland went on to say in his email to staff: “We believe that the cost of operating the current valet and bar departments will outweigh the profit made on sales. We are also introducing a new Loyalty Programme which removes the complimentary drinks element of our previous scheme ultimately resulting in a drop in the demand in service requirements.”

Opening hours will also be changed he said moving from a 24 hour operation to closing now at 6am or 4am each day. In a statement from Aspers it said that because of the pandemic affects on so many businesses it is looking to identify where changes can be made and it is expected to make some 45 workers at the Milton Keynes site redundant.
